Red Ribbon Germany

When I founded Red Ribbon Germany mid 1993 as private initiative, I had no idea what kind of avalanche I would be kicking off. In the beginning, I could only persuade a handful of my closest friends to support me in distributing Red Ribbons in the area of my hometown Munich. But in a relatively short time the number of volunteers grew significantly and today there are approx. 1.500 supporters all over Germany.

Despite this enormous growth which also had some effect on the events organized by Red Ribbon Germany, I was able to keep the private character of this initiative alive until today. I find this very important as it allows to make all activities of Red Ribbon Germany more transparent and things are easier to organize. There is no over-sized administration eating up most of the donations and of course I am not paying myself a salary using these funds. On the contrary, the whole organization is done in our spare time as a voluntary job, i.e. unpaid.

We kicked this off with a dream start in November 1993: Back then the Red Ribbon was introduced to the German public during the broadcast of the ZDF Pop Show. The meaning of this global symbol for AIDS awareness was explained to the audience by presenter Kristiane Backer during a show which later was broadcasted all over Europe. During this event I had the idea for the project "Artists About AIDS".

In September 1994 Red Ribbon Germany was accepted as support group by the German AIDS Foundation in Bonn. Until today we have distributed more than 10 million Red Ribbons in Germany and we have collected donations of more than 200.000 € for AIDS charity.
